At Warrior Square two figures parted in silence and merged into the darkness. One walked deeper into the leaf-strewn green, taking a seat at one of the park benches along the square. They sat in the cold, hidden by the darkness. The other paused at the hedge opposite the car park and watched as one of the PCSOs darted across the street and disappeared from sight. She seemed in a hurry. Interesting… The watcher moved carefully, taking sidesteps until she had a clear view of where the policewoman was headed. There. The watcher saw her target. A tall, loud policeman walking up the slope towards them. A nagging nuisance of a woman was pursuing him, complaining about police interference and keeping safe. Then the watcher caught a glimpse of the other girl at the policeman’s side, and her eyes widened. Hairs stood up on the back of her arms. It was her. The one that got away. The woman smiled. For a time she had thought it was all over, and even now, the odds seemed stacked against them. Four police officers. But only a couple of them seemed like any real threat. And the closer the big policeman came, the brighter she felt. The big copper sounded old and tired. And they were almost here. There she was, the lost girl, the last of the untraceables. She was perfect. Now, she was the only one that would do. She was their last chance. Their last roll of the dice before the window closed and the job got too risky. Opportunity was knocking, and this time they could not fail.
